Non-Caravan Sydney trip - Day 1

2026-04-02

A small break from the caravan content, as we trip down to Sydney to see Lea's parents over Easter. Of course, while it would have been nice to take the caravan, and do the trip in two days, the current malarchy in the middle-east and subsequent fuel pricing quickly put paid to that idea. Additionally, it would have meant towing a caravan through Sydney roads, and I'm going to avoid that if at all possible.

So we got up around 5ish, breakfasted, packed the car and away we went. It's a fairly straight-forward trip. We stop to charge the car four times, Ballina, Coffs Harbour, Thrumster (Port Macquarie) and Karuah. At this last charging stop, since it was right near the servo, it was very obvious just how expensive fuel has gotten compared to EV charging. We were paying 75¢/kw for charging, and meanwhile, ULP91 was 268.9¢/L. This meant that we filled for $19 compared to if we filled the Prado for an equivalent amount would have been around $300.

What we did notice was that the amount of traffic on the roads was significantly less than on previous trips, and we suspect that was mostly due to the fuel prices. I'm not expecting there'll be a lot to report on this trip, since it is mostly just a family trip.
